Sharks in Danger of Extinction

This Shark Week, lend your voice and help keep our finned friends from the dangers of extinction. Spread the word about shark conservation with Thunderclap! Here's how it works:

  1. Donate a Facebook and/or Twitter post to show your support. By joining at the top of this page, you give Thunderclap one-time-only permission to automatically post to your account, on August 15th at 3pm.
  2. Encourage your friends to join this Thunderclap. The more that join, the louder Shark Week conservation efforts will be heard worldwide.
  3. Tune in to Shark Week on August 12th at 9pm ET/PT on Discovery Channel, and visit Shark Week's conservation partners websites to learn how you can get more involved.

About Shark Conservation

As dominant ocean predators, sharks play an important role in keeping the ocean ecosystem healthy. They keep the prey population in balance, which is critical to the greater health of aquatic wildlife and fisheries.

Shark populations are plummeting around the world and many species are at risk of extinction. Fins are sliced off of tens of millions of sharks each year, sometimes while they are still alive, for use in shark fin soup. Sharks are also often caught as "bycatch," which may be unintentional, but those sharks are increasingly kept and killed for their fins rather than thrown back. This level of shark destruction is unsustainable.

This year, Shark Week is supporting three organizations dedicated to protecting sharks: the Pew Environment Group, Oceana, and Shark Savers. Check out these three groups to find out how you can get involved:

The Pew Environment Group, through its global shark conservation campaign, works to raise awareness about the global decline of sharks and to urge countries to establish policies that create shark sanctuaries, protect at-risk species, and push for stronger global shark fin regulations.

Oceana works internationally to push for shark finning bans, species-specific shark management and reduced shark by-catch.

Shark Savers is dedicated to saving sharks through building awareness, education, and action. Shark Savers’ programs result in more protections for sharks by motivating people to stop consuming sharks and shark fin soup, working for the creation of shark sanctuaries and improved regulations, and empowering divers as advocates and citizen scientists for sharks.
